December 15th learning log

What We Did
First we did 3 rounds of the geography challenge test for practice, so that when we did the real thing we have an idea of what it's like. Then we signed out our books, and read for the rest of the block. After break we read for another 20 minutes, then Ms. Lees explained how to do a historical web based on the books we are reading using the example "Fraser Heights". Then with our book groups we had to think of headings.

Learning Intention
The practice geography challenge was so we could get a taste of what the real one was like, and maybe remember some of the answers for the real test. At the same time we learned a little Canadian history.
We needed to read some of our books so that we would be able to start the webs in second block. When we went together with our groups it was also enhancing our oral, and group collaboration skills.

Connections
It is always good to have some background knowledge on Canadian history, so for future classes, and maybe even jobs, we will be able to use the information from the geography challenge test, and practice. Reading historical fiction shows us there are more ways to learn about history then just what we do in class, so this is a more interesting way to learn.

Tips
Try to read your book as fast as you can so you can enjoy your christmas holidays without the stress of having to finish the book. But remember, we also will have one more week after christmas break to finish our books, so don't stress too much.

Homework
Read your book!

Well thats pretty much it! Hope this helps!

Learning Log for December 9

What we did
We did the CanSpell tournament today, and the top five spellers get to go to the school tournament on  Monday after school. The top five were Hannah, Mark, Emily, Tiffany, and Michelle with the alternate Shawn.

We also finished the movie "The First Knight" and the questions since we had time after CanSpell. We also discussed the last question: Why was King Arthur put out to sea? We discussed how there could be many different answers because of the way you think about it.

Why we did it
CanSpell: To determine the finalists for the bee on Monday after school.

Movie: to have a better understanding of the Middle Ages and the life in that period.

Connections:
CanSpell: some jobs may need fast and good spellers (ex. clerk) and this is a good way to practice

Movie: you have more knowledge about Middle Ages

Homework
finish the question sheet about the First Knight movie

check Ms. Lees' blog for new updates

Learning Log for December 6th

Hi Guys,

The schedule is a little bit messed up this week, but hopefully we will get back on track next week.

What We Did:
-CanSpell Round Robin: We had a practice spelling bee where Ms. Lees went around the room and tested us with Grade 7, 8, and 9 words. The three people who were the last ones left were XingLu, Chase, and me, though none of us got our last words correct.

- Wrote notes on a video about the Middle Ages: We had to write the notes in a modified version of Cornell, where the left side was where we wrote the main ideas, and the right side was where we wrote the details about the main ideas. The main points were the early ages, the high ages, and the late ages.

Why We Did It:
-CanSpell: To practice for our CanSpell tournament.

-Notes: To practice taking notes and to learn about the Middle Ages. It also helps us realise what the key ideas are, to summarize, and to organize information in an easy-to-read format.

Connections/Reflections:
-CanSpell: In school and jobs we need to be able to spell words correctly. Also, if we wish to participate in spelling bees outside of school, this will help us practice.

-Notes: It will help us during school and in a meeting to be able to summarize key points of information so that we can remember only important information, and not unimportant information.

Homework:
Basically, just study for CanSpell. Also, if you have not finished your Geography test, go in tomorrow morning before class to finish it. If you have not started, go to flex on Thursday.

Tips:
-Study for CanSpell: It will do nothing but good!

- Work on summarizing: Look at some articles online and try to summarize key parts of the article  for practice on note taking.

-Go to flex: Go to flex if you have questions or concerns about homework.

Next up is Aiden! Hope that helped!

Learning Log For December 5th

Since Kia couldn't do it today, I'm doing today's learning log!

What We Did
Today was more of a work period so we worked on our note making.

Why We did It
When we are taking notes it's important to summarize and put things that connect into their own groups.  When you summarize, we are not writing out a whole page for notes, so only write down what you think the key points are. Also we have to remember to keep our notes in our own words, and not copying directly from the textbook.

Connections
When we are older and university, or at jobs, at certain conferences, you'll need to take notes, so it's good to know how to take good notes now.

Homework
You can't exactly work on the notes at home since we can't take the text books home, but you should always be studying for Canspell.

Tips
When we do the notes, try to finish as much as you can in class, because Ms.Lees won't be giving us much more class time to work on those. Also try to work quietly and more effective so that she can get to the conferences.

I hope this helps!

And so tomorrow it's your turn Kia!

Learning Log for December 1

What we did
I am doing it today since Aiden is away.
Today we worked on note taking. Ms. Lees taught us how to use text features (bolded words, sections, etc.) and do an outline for note taking. For events, you use the 3C's: Cause, Course of action, and Consequence. We did the first chapter using an outline, web, and Cornell Note Taking.

For the people who needed help with geography (time zones and scales) Ms. Lees was helping them. We did not do any portfolio conversations today but did a written spelling bee (boys against girls).

Learning Intention
To learn about different types of note taking skills and practice it. In addition, it made us remember more about the history.

To study for the geography test on Friday.
To study for Canspell next Friday.

Connections
Note taking is a very important skill for studying or reviewing any subject at school.

Homework
Study for Canspell
Study for geography test tomorrow

Tips
Check Ms. Lees blog for more details on Canspell and geography test.
